Book Publisher Suspends New Acquisitions – NYTimes.com

The publishing biz is in major trouble. I think the days of ‘big publishing’ by corporate media behemoths are coming to an end.

    Well,
Here in NYC, Barnes and Noble has been doing horribly in there last few quarters.
Having worked at Barnes and Noble once upon a time I remember the hay-day thinking the Riggio’s were untouchable.
Now it seems like all of them are closing or close to closing.
I credit that to sky high rental rates more so then anything else but the article you posted brings to the table another story.
I remember working there one day when some person asked me if we had any books on “Intro to Sociology” then I replied “Ok, Introduction to Sociology let’s see what we have”…. To which the gentleman replied “No, Intro to Sociology” :/..
Point being nobody reads anymore :(

Yeah. But I also just think this was an ill-fated business model. The ‘big box’ retail strategy (i.e. achieve growth by opening more and more stores and squashing the competition) just won’t work in the long run for books. The model is too dependent on bestsellers. Same goes for corporate publishing. I think we’re heading back to a time when there are many small publishers. Eventually, everyone will self-publish because we’ll deliver e-books via the Internets.
