Roadtripping to the District of Columbia

So last week we spent a long weekend in Washington, D.C. We saw friends and family and more friends, and it was a terrific trip.

All except for the first night.

We left Newport later than we would have liked because we didn’t feel like jumping through our assholes first thing in the morning. We left shortly after 11:00 a.m. and arrived by about 8:00 p.m. (One thing about traveling with a baby is you can basically ignore the travel-time estimate from Google maps. Or just add two hours to it.)

Let me just say this: Sean does not like being strapped into his car seat for 8 hours. How do I know? Because every time it’s happened, our sweet-natured, easy-going little boy has metamorphosed into a screaming, inconsolable, won’t-go-to-sleep little boy. I can’t say I blame him: that’s probably what most of us would do at the end of a day in the car if it were socially acceptable behavior for adults.

After we arrived at Megan and Luke’s house, Sean went to sleep for a couple of hours, only to wake up during the fifteen minutes Danielle and I were out of the apartment to retrieve a load from the car. After that, he wouldn’t go back to sleep. We took him for a walk around Dupont Circle at midnight. Needless to say, we got a lot of strange looks from passersby.

In the end, we had to let Sean ‘self-soothe’ before he could fall asleep. Then he woke up again at 4:30. It was a rough night. Megan slept through all of it, but I’m afraid Luke couldn’t say the same. Sorry Luke!
