DOOOOOOOMMMMM!

September 21st, 2008 · No Comments

New York Magazine has a fun article about the publishing industry’s impending doom. Booksquare disagrees with it. Whom to believe?

Via The Daily Dish.

I go back and forth in my feelings about publishing. That’s a luxury only an unpublished novelist can claim. I want to write/publish a book that will make me tons of money. I also want to work with a publisher who will work hard for my book (i.e. actually edit the manuscript and market it). The trouble is that the former desire can only be fulfilled by a big publisher (if you’re talking about big advances; royalties are another thing altogether), while the latter desire is typically only fulfilled by an independent. (I read all the time that editors really do edit, but I can’t believe they do it all that much. There are way too many really sloppy books out there. For one thing, they don’t edit at the office. At the office, they attend meetings. They edit at home at night and on weekends. Supposedly.)
