Last night I passed the 10,000-word milestone in my rewrite of Lithium. Milestones, in writing, are all kind of arbitrary. The only one that really matters, career-wise, is publication, and even then you could be looking at a very long journey up the mountain. I guess it depends on what’s at your mountaintop: publication? a good review? universally good reviews? riches? fame?
Maybe it helps to think of the journey as a series of hills.
For this particular project, I figure 10k is about 15% of the way there. The first draft was 75,000 words.
Gosh, thinking about it in those terms makes the finish line seem very far away. This is the fourth mile of the marathon.
