A further example of the decline of Western culture: My Sweet Lord.
A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday amid a choir of complaining Catholics that included Cardinal Edward Egan.
See, now that it’s permissible to make fun of anything, much of what we once called the ‘power of art’ has been diminished. If the power of art is the ability to teach us something about ourselves and our condition, then this sculpture fails to achieve the stature of ‘art.’ The layers of irony involved with displaying a chocolate sculpture of Christ entitled ‘My Sweet Lord’ during Holy Week amount to nothing but eye-rolling and angry phone calls from the offended.
‘My Sweet Lord’ is nothing but a clever pun.
