I went on a little exploratory drive tonight out to Fall River. At first I thought it was an incredibly depressing city, not at all what I expected. The mall was a collection of discount stores, and, in place of department stores like Sears or JC Penny’s, on one end was a Wal-Mart, and on the other was K-Mart. I drove down the road a bit to the town center, and there were no hash marks separating the lanes on a four-lane road. The restaurants were all fast food.
But then, on my way to a movie theater to see The Descent (pretty good shock-fest), I saw a gray-haired string bean of a man with a great nose riding his grocery cart out to his car the way kids do, pushing himself along with one foot while keeping the other on the cross beam and leaning forward to keep the cart from tipping backwards. He was grinning like an absolute fool.
He changed my whole impression of the place.
